Day 12- Cryptid
On November 12, 1966, five men who were digging a grave at a cemetery near Clendenin, West Virginia, claimed to have seen a man-like figure fly low from the trees over their heads. This is often identified as the first known sighting of what became known as the Mothman.
3 days later, two young couples from Point Pleasant told police they saw a large grey creature whose eyes "glowed red" when the car's headlights picked it up. They described it as a "large flying man with ten-foot wings", following their car while they were driving in an area outside of town known as "the TNT area", the site of a former World War II munitions plant.
The very next day, the first newspaper report was published in the Point Pleasant Register. The national press soon picked up the reports and helped spread the story across the United States.
Popular press and witnesses claims the mothman to have been an alien, a supernatural manifestation, a previously unknown species of animal, or a mutated bird.
Some believe that the Mothman tries to warn people about disasters about to happen.
Furthermore, some witnesses are said to have been harassed by men dressed in black telling them to keep quiet about the creature.
In Point Pleasant, a 12-foot-tall metallic statue of the creature was unveiled in 2003 and The Mothman Museum and Research Center opened in 2005. On the 3rd weekend of every September there is a festival in Point Pleasant of a variety of events one of which is a mothman pancake eating contest.
