Day 14- Laboratory 🌛
Alchemy is an ancient practice shrouded in mystery and secrecy. Its practitioners mainly sought to turn lead into gold, a quest that has captured the imaginations of people for thousands of years. However, the goals of alchemy went far beyond simply creating some golden nuggets.
The 16th century alchemist known as Paracelsus, provides a recipe for creating a so called “homunculus” or “little person” in his work, De Natura Rerum. Heated by decaying horse dung, the semen of a man is left to grow in a sealed glass container for at least forty days. Once more or less human in appearance, it is to be regularly fed with blood during the next forty weeks. A Homunculus, grotesque, yet childlike in appearance, has been created.
Paracelsus instructs that the homunculus ought to be “educated with the greatest care and zeal, until it grows up and begins to display intelligence.” Some Homunculus grow up to be as big as or even bigger than human beings.
In some cases these creatures can see into the future and might be used as servants or because of their magical qualities give their master the ability to speak to spirits and demons.
