Day 9- Coven
A coven is simply put a ”gathering of witches”.
The traditional number of witches of a coven is said to be 13. The members are called coveners. Although some covens are all-women or all-men, the ideal coven consists of six men and six women with the addition of a leader.
This was said to produce the best harmony and results in magic.
The leader or “Grandmaster” was said to be either the devil, or a person who, witch-hunters said, represented Satan and dressed up in horns and animal skins.
Each coven was independent yet supposedly linked to other covens in a region through a cooperative network. In 1591, three covens allegedly worked together to try to murder King James VI of Scotland.
During the Salem witch trials, some accused witches confessed under torture to having joined covens. Over 200 people were accused of witchery and were told to confess or be killed. As a result, 14 women, 5 men and 2 dogs were executed. One person was pressed to death under a pile of stones for refusing to testify.
This is painting nr.9 for #mabsdrawlloweenclub I’m not sure if I like the outcome but let me know what you think🙏🏼 Text source: Wikipedia.org, The Encyclopedia of Witches, Witchcraft and Wicca -Rosemary Guiley
