Day 24- La Llorona
La Llorona ("The Weeping Woman") is one of the most famous oral legends of Latin American folklore. Abandoned by her husband, a woman was left alone to raise her two sons. Instead, out of grief and anger she drowned them in a river. Realizing what she had done, she searched for her children, but the river had already carried them away. Days later, she was found dead on the river bank. She had killed her children and killed herself. Because of her sins, she is condemned to wander the earth until she finds the bodies of her children.
La Llorona kidnaps wandering children at night, mistaking them for her own. She begs the heavens for forgiveness, and drowns the children she kidnaps.
Many parents in Latin America use this story to scare their children from staying out too late.
La Llorona appears at night or in the late evening by rivers or lakes, wearing a white gown with a veil.
If you hear her weeping for her children, you are to run the opposite way, for her cries may mark you for misfortune or even death.
It is said that when her wails sound near she is actually far and when she sounds distant, she is actually very near...
